The China Mobile Communications Group (CMC) initiated on Wednesday the GSM (global system of mobile communications) service on the Xisha Archipelago in the South China Sea.
It took more than 2 million yuan (approximate 241,000 US dollars) to complete the GSM network that covers an area of 10 square kilometers.
The network capacity is supported by three carrier communication stations as well as 20 phone channels, and is expected to greatly accelerate the tourism and fishery development on the islands, according to experts.
There are more than 500 mobile phone users on Yongxing Island, the largest island in the archipelago, which also includes a group of 23 islets and four lagoon-islets, and is about 300 miles southeast of Hainan island province, the southernmost province of China.
