China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) was praised by the Massachusetts state government in the United States for its contribution to the expansion of trade between the New England region and Asia.
At an international forum here on security of the global shipping industry, Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey told the audience Tuesday that since COSCO opened a route between Boston and Asia a year ago, the cargo volume passing through Boston port to Asia has doubled and the import volume from Asia to Boston port four-folded.
She thanked the Chinese conglomerate and its partners for starting direct service to the port of Boston in March 2001 and hoped that COSCO and the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) would continue to cooperate closely in keeping the success rolling.
The forum was organized by Massport to mark the first anniversary of the opening of the Asia-Boston route by COSCO and its three Asian partners,
At a ceremony held on Monday night, Massachusetts State Secretary of Commerce and Labor Robert Pozen presented COSCO President and CEO Wei Jiafu a citation signed by State Governor Mitt Romney and his deputy Healey. The citation said the direct carrier service is "deserving of recognition by all the citizens of Massachusetts."
The Massachusetts State Senate also conferred a citation to COSCO President Wei for his efforts to foster closer trade ties between the United States and China.
Addressing the ceremony, Wei promised to continue his efforts to promote trade between China and the New England region in the United States, where Massachusetts is located, and to find new export and import opportunities for New England businesses.
On March 21, 1999, COSCO's Zhenhe freight ship from Qingdao, east China, sailed into the port of Boston, marking the start of COSCO's service between Boston and Asia. Massport invited COSCO to launch the service after the Masek shipping company halted its service in the port in 2000, resulting in the loss of some 9,000 jobs.
The Chinese conglomerate has more than 600 ships of assorted types and 1,200 routes to ports of more than 160 countries and regions in the world.
