The Chinese People's Armed Police(PAP) deployed another contingent of more than 2,000 personnel to combat forest fires in the northeastern Greater Xing'an Mountains Monday, bringing the total PAP forest squad to 2,850.

The groups of policemen and officers, who were transported by helicopters, have been ordered to launch an intensified assault to put out the raging fires.

The scattered forest fires started on March 22 in the Greater Xing'an Mountain areas, which had suffered lingering dry spells resultant from scanty rainfall on the northern slopes of the mountains especially since last year, according to local official sources.

Meanwhile, a nationwide tele-conference was held on Monday, at which Zhou Shengxian, director of the State Forestry Administration, urged local authorities to give top priority to forest fire prevention and increasing the local people's awareness in guarding against any possible forest fire, as the Brightness Day is drawing near. It is China's traditional festival for worshipping at ancestral graves, which falls on April 5.

A series of forest fires that occurred in Sha'anxi and Heilongjiang provinces, respectively in northwest and northeast China, have raised concern among the Chinese Communist Party and government leaders. Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice-Premiers Huang Ju and Hui Liangyu, and State Councilor Hua Jianmin have issued instructions on the prevention of possible forest fires. They urged localities to be vigilant, carry out responsibility systems with regard to forest fire prevention, remove any hidden dangers and work out concrete measures, so as to guard against any possible forest fires or extinguish them as soon as they are just kindled.
