A major landslide in northern Bolivia on Monday buried some 400 homes and hundreds of people were feared missing, said reports from La Paz, the capital of Bolivia.
La Paz governor Mateo Laura was quoted as saying that there wasa landslide in the mining town of Chima, about 200 km north of thecapital, and some 400 houses had been buried.
Jose Plata, head of a mining cooperative in the region, said: "We have suffered a tragedy this morning, the losses are impossibleto calculate."
Several hundred people might be affected in the landslide, which had also buried mining equipment and machinery, he said. No official number of victims was available so far.
Gold-mining operations in the region might have caused the disaster, officials said.
The reports said local authorities had sent rescue personnel and equipment to the area, and some injured miners had been sent to hospital in a nearby town.
