Liaoning Province in northeast China has used 35.19 million yuan in World Bank loans to control tuberculosis since 1992, according to officials from the provincial health bureau.
With the assistance of the World Bank, tuberculosis has been greatly brought under control in the province over the past dozen years, the officials said.
By the end of 2001, the province had detected 110,000 tuberculosis patients, including 64,000 who were contagious.
A total of 50,524 of the patients have been healed through the World Bank-funded program.
Between 2003-2008, a new round of tuberculosis prevention programs will be carried out in Liaoning, with World Bank loans and funds donated from the British government.
The new program will be focused on rural areas, aiming to treat55,000 people by 2005 and 90,000 by 2008. Efforts will be made to offer the BCG vaccine to more children in villages.
