Another British Soldier Killed in War with Iraq

The British Ministry of Defense said Sunday that another soldier was killed in action near Basra in southern Iraq, as this ongoing US-led war entered its 11th day.

The British Ministry of Defense said Sunday that another soldier was killed in action near Basra in southern Iraq, as this ongoing US-led war entered its 11th day.

"We can confirm a British soldier has been killed today in action around Basra," a spokeswoman for the ministry said, declining to comment on further details of the soldier's identity or regiment, or the circumstances surrounding the death.

But media reports said the soldier was a royal marine, who was killed in an ambush occurred as 539 Assault Squadron Royal Marinescontinued clearing the waterways on the al Fao Peninsula.

Several others were also injured in the heavy grenade and gunfire attack from the Iraqi forces, reports said.

The soldier is the 24th British servicemen to die in Iraq sincethis war began on March 20.

So far, five British soldiers have been killed in action, 14 inaccidents and another five in "friendly fire" incidents.

Britain, who firmly supports the United States in the run-up tothis war in Iraq, has deployed about 45,000 troops to the Gulf.

Earlier in the day, British Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon said British troops would be replaced if the war continues for months.
