Premier Wen Jiabao visited earthquake-devastated areas in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region from March 28-30, encouraging local people to unite and work hard to restore production and rebuild homes.
On Feb. 24, Bachu and Jiashi counties in western Xinjiang were rocked by an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale and, subsequently, by a series of aftershocks. But since then, the work of rebuilding has been proceeding smoothly.
Accompanied by regional leaders, the premier visited the worst-hit villagers' homes to see if they had been attended to by local authorities. He informed the villagers of the massive assistance and donations from the central leadership and from people from other parts of the country.
During his visit, Wen told local officials to help villagers rebuild their houses by providing them with quality building materials at reasonable prices.
The premier also visited school children attending classes in makeshift shelters, victims still recovering from injuries, and soldiers who risked their lives in rescue activities.
In his talks with local officials, Wen called for greater attention to the issue of social stability in Xinjiang. (Xinhua News)
