A suicide car bombing killed five US soldiers at a checkpoint in the Iraqi city of Najaf, where the US-led troops were meeting with strong resistance from Iraqi forces, CNN reported Saturday.

The worst suicide attack in 10 days has been confirmed by US Central Command, which, however, could not decide on the exact casualties, according to the report.

A BBC correspondent had reported the day before from the Iraqi capital city of Baghdad: Should there be street warfare, the US-led coalition forces would be probably like Israeli soldiers under attack in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
