Pentagon officials said on Thursday that United States military planners will add 100,000 troops to US ground forces in Iraq next month, as US Army soldiers and Marines have met stiffer than expected resistance from the Iraqi troops.

There are plans calling for deploying up to 100,000 more US soldiers and Marines to Iraq by the end of April, to bring the total of US-led forces in the Gulf country to about 225,000, local media quoted unidentified US officials as saying.

Last week, the United States launched military attacks on Iraq, without authorization from the United Nations.
