Troops from the US Army's 4th Infantry Division, based in Fort Hood, Texas on Thursday began flying to the Gulf to join the Iraq war.
Advance parties of the division departed for the Gulf after a ceremony to "case" the division's colors, base spokesman Staff Sergeant Keith Thompson said.
The rest of the division will fly to the region over the next week, where they will marry up with their M-1 Abrams tanks and M-2Bradley Fighting Vehicles, he said.
The high-tech 4th Infantry Division is considered one of the most modern fighting forces in the military.
The division, with a total of 16,000 troops at Fort Hood and Fort Carson, Colorado, has been awaiting deployment for more than two months.
It was originally scheduled to go to Turkey to open a northern front against Iraq, but Turkey refused to grant basing rights for the US troops.
