Iraqi Ambassador to Russia Abbas Khalaf denied Thursday that the Iraqi army has executed American and British prisoners of war (POWs).
Western media's reports on POWs executions "are lies inspired by the aggressors themselves, who kill innocent civilians in Iraq every day," Khalaf said in an interview with the Interfax news agency.
US defense officials on Thursday said Iraq may have executed US POWs.
Marine Corps Gen. Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told CNN's "Larry King Live" that Iraqis had committed an array of war crimes since the war began, including executing POWs and storing weapons in schools.
"They have executed prisoners of war," Pace said in an apparent reference to 12 army troops captured or killed Sunday when their supply convoy was ambushed near Nassiriya in southern Iraq.
Khalaf yet again reiterated that Baghdad intends to treat POWs strictly in line with the Geneva Convention.
"We will announce the names, the places of service, and other precise information about prisoners of war," the diplomat said.
Iraqi television will show "a large number of killed and captured" servicemen from the anti-Iraq coalition on Thursday, theambassador said.
