British Destroys More Iraqi Tanks, APCs at Basra
British forces destroyed 14 Iraqi tanks and four armored personnel carriers on Thursday, foiling a fresh attempt by troops loyal to President Saddam Hussein to quit the southern city of Basra, a British military spokesman said.
British forces destroyed 14 Iraqi tanks and four armored personnel carriers on Thursday, foiling a fresh attempt by troops loyal to President Saddam Hussein to quit the southern city of Basra, a British military spokesman said.
"It was a very quick, short, sharp engagement. They were all destroyed," said Captain Al Lockwood, the British military spokesman at US Central Command forward headquarters in Qatar.
US-led forces destroyed a column of Iraqi tanks and armored vehicles that tried to move south from Basra overnight. On Tuesday, a British naval commander said his forces had blocked an attempted breakout from Basra of up to 50 tanks.
