Architecture Designs for 2008 Olympic Main Stadium
Thirteen designs for the National Stadium -- the 2008 Beijing Olympic main stadium -- are put on show on March 26 to 31 free at the Beijing International Convention Center, where people are welcomed to vote for their favorite designs.
The Beijing Urban Planning Commission (BUPC) said public opinions and suggestions would be taken into consideration when the final design is decided.
Among the 13 architecture schemes, three were singled out by a group of architects and experts as the best ones in Tuesday's competition.
A consortium of Swiss company Herzog & De Meuron and China Architecture Design Institute, Beijing Architecture Design Institute, and a consortium of Japanese AXS Company and Tsinghua University Architecture Design Institute, were the winners for their "unique" and "advanced" design concepts, the BUPC said after the competition Tuesday.
The eventual design will draw up more detailed architectural plans, with construction work set to start on December 24, the BUPC said.
The 80,000-seat National Stadium, located in the south of the Olympic Green, will host the opening and closing ceremonies as well as track-and-field events during the 2008 Olympics.
