Iraq on Tuesday denied that it had been represented with a peace proposal by Saudi Arabia.

In a statement to Al-Jazeera TV, Iraqi Information Minister Mohammed Said al-Sahhaf said "There is no basis for Saudi Foreign Minister (Saud al-Faisal)'s comments."

Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said on Tuesday that his country has proposed to the United States and Iraq a peace initiative aimed at ending the ongoing military campaign.

Speaking at a news conference, Saud said Saudi Arabia has contacted the two countries directly and is waiting for a response from the two sides.

"We have made the proposal and we are waiting for a possible response," the foreign minister said.

Saud did not give details of the peace proposal.

"I don't want to say we were rebuffed because we were not rebuffed, but nor were we given authorization that they are going with it," the foreign minister said.

Even though Saudi Arabia has not gotten a positive reaction form the parties yet, " It does not mean we are going to stop," he said.

"We will be knocking on all doors to bring peace," he added.

The foreign minister urged Iraq and United States to stop the fighting and end the crisis peacefully.

The United States said it was not aware of the peace initiative.
