US Rejects Peace Proposal from Saudi Arabia
The United States on Tuesday rejected a peace proposal reportedly put forward by Saudi Arabia, saying that Washington is not aware of any such proposal and it will not work at this stage even if it exists.
The United States on Tuesday rejected a peace proposal reportedly put forward by Saudi Arabia, saying that Washington is not aware of any such proposal and it will not work at this stage even if it exists.
"We're not aware of any peace proposal from Saudi Arabia. ... There's been no particular approach or proposal made to us from Saudi Arabia at this stage," State Department Richard Boucher saidat a news briefing, when asked to confirm whether Washington has received the Saudi initiative.
He said the time for cooperative solutions with President Saddam Hussein's government has passed because the conflict has begun after Baghdad refused to disarm.
"Unfortunately, we think the time for cooperative solutions with this Iraqi regime has passed," he said.
"We've said very clearly our goal in Iraq is to eliminate weapons of mass destruction, to eliminate the threat that they pose to the region and the international community, and to free the Iraqi people," Boucher went on.
"Peace proposals that leave the current Iraqi regime in place to once again threaten the international community, its neighbors and Iraq's own people are just not workable," the spokesman noted.
Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal reportedlysaid earlier Tuesday that his country had proposed to Washington and Baghdad a peace plan designed to end the week-long war.
"We have made the proposal and we are waiting for a positive response," the minister was quoted as saying.
Neither the Saudi foreign minister nor US officials have disclosed any details of the proposed peace plan.
