Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said on Tuesday that his country has proposed to the United States and Iraq a peace initiative aimed atending the ongoing military campaign.
Speaking at a news conference, Saud said Saudi Arabia has contacted the two countries directly and is waiting for a responsefrom the two sides.
"We have made the proposal and we are waiting for a possible response," the foreign minister said.
Saud did not give details of the peace proposal.
"I don't want to say we were rebuffed because we were not rebuffed, but nor were we given authorization that they are going with it," the foreign minister said.
Even though Saudi Arabia has not gotten a positive reaction form the parties yet, " It does not mean we are going to stop," hesaid.
"We will be knocking on all doors to bring peace," he added.
The foreign minister urged Iraq and United States to stop the fighting and end the crisis peacefully.
Although there has not been formal response from the governmentof the United States, reports said a senior US official has rejected the peace proposal, saying the United States was not looking for a peace plan but the elimination of the regime of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
