The Iraqi Embassy in Beijing issued a press release Tuesday on the United States-led military action against Iraq, indicating that the Iraqi armed forces shot down a warplane and a helicopter.

The release reads:

The Iraqi armed forces are still combating the attacks of the United States and Britain in Umm Qasr, Fao, Nasiriyah and Najaf, and have destroyed 23 tanks and four armored cars.

At the Basrah airport, soldiers of the Arab Baath Socialist Party and local residents curbed the advance of the enemy, and defeated the enemy's attempt to cross a bridge.

In Nasiriyah, local residents foiled the enemy's actions to camp, and wiped out a reconnaissance troop in the desert of Najaf.

Iraqi President Saddam Hussein praised the Iraqi soldiers' excellent actions in a televised speech Monday, saying the Iraqi forces had inflicted great losses on the US-led troops.
