The Iraqi Embassy in Beijing issued a press release Monday on the military action launched by the United States and Britain against Iraq, indicating that 62 Iraqi civilians have been killed and 491 injured by the bombing carried out by the US and British air force. According to the release:

Iraqi leaders, including Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, have announced that they will abide by the Geneva Conventions, which is in absolute accordance with Islamic and Arab principles.

Five farmers shot down two US armed helicopters in the Kerbela area, and Iraqi television broadcast live from the scene.

Iraq has captured a small number of US and British soldiers in the Nasiriyah area.

The Iraqi side has blocked the passage of US and British troops that were sent to the Kerbela and Najaf areas, the release says.

Iraq has also inflicted heavy losses on the US-British troops in the Umm Qasr and Fao area.

US and British soldiers kidnapped some Iraqi civilians as their prisoners of war, described in the release as a wanton violation of the Geneva Conventions and international law.

The US military said Monday that 10 US Marines were killed in a fierce battle near the city of Nasiriyah and confirmed the downing of an armed helicopter in Iraq.
