Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Monday that the newly-elected Chinese government will join efforts with the Pakistani side to substantially push forward bilateral relations.

In his talks with visiting Pakistani Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing Monday afternoon, Premier Wen had high praise for the development of bilateral relations.

He said the two countries treat each other with sincerity and trust and have adopted the five principles of peaceful co-existence as the basic principles guiding their bilateral relations.

He said many generations of leaders from the two countries had maintained close contact and played irreplaceable roles in enhancing understanding, expanding common views and promoting cooperation between the two countries.

He said the two sides understand and support each other in international affairs and safeguard their common interests.

Wen stressed that developing a comprehensive cooperative partnership between China and Pakistan is the current policy of the Chinese government.

During the talks, the two sides reached broad consensus on such issues as maintaining high-level contacts, strengthening exchanges at all levels and conducting closer cooperation in the anti-terrorism field. The two sides agree that consolidating and improving bilateral relations is not only in the interest of the two countries, but is also conducive to promoting regional peace and development and encouraging the development of a fair and reasonable international political and economic order.

Wen said that, although the current global situation is undergoing profound changes, the people's aspiration for peace, development and cooperation remains the objective of most human beings. He said China is an important force in maintaining global peace, stability and development and will play an active and influential role in international affairs.

He said China welcomes the easing of tensions in South Asia and hopes to witness the rise of a peaceful, stable and prosperous South Asia.

Jamali said he was pleased to be the first guest received by the new Chinese government. Pakistan's friendship with China has always been a cornerstone of his country's foreign policy, he said.

This policy will not be altered by regional or international issues, he said, speaking highly of China's constructive role in regional and international affairs.

Pakistan will adhere to the "one-China" policy and expand economic and trade cooperation with China so as to boost bilateral relations in a comprehensive manner in the new century, he said.

In a written interview with the Associated Press of Pakistan in Beijing prior to Jamali's arrival, Wen enunciated the Chinese government's stance on China-Pakistani relations.
