The 2003 China-US economic cooperation and trade fair opened Monday in the capital of central China's Henan Province, the first of its kind held in response to market demand.

The fair has been sponsored by the China-US Association for the Promotion of International Cooperation and the Henan provincial Economic Strategy Society.

It has attracted a large number of Chinese and US companies in areas including building materials, machinery, finance, electronics, telecommunications, jewelry, pharmaceuticals, culture, and education.

Those attending the fair include a delegation of more than 20 American business people who have plans to invest in China. They held discussions with about 500 prospective Chinese trade partners, and the two sides signed letters of intent.

Henan, listed fifth in China in GDP, reported a year-on-year economic growth of 9.5 percent in 2002 and an 11.7 percent rise inindustrial output, setting record highs since the 1997 southeast Asia's financial crisis.

With the largest population in the country, Henan is a big magnet for US investors for its rich mineral resources and potentially huge market and economic development.

Sponsors of the fair will also launch campaigns to help increase cooperation between the two nations' small and medium-sized enterprises and cities, as well as exchanges of big brand name products.
