Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed Monday the constitutional referendum in Chechnya, saying it resolved the problem of the country's territorial integrity.

"We have resolved the last serious problem related to Russia's territorial integrity," he told a cabinet meeting.

"The people of Chechnya did this directly and in a most democratic way," he said.

Putin said the referendum's outcome was expected, but the figures exceeded even the most optimistic expectations.

More than 80 percent of 5,450,545 Chechen people who are eligible to vote, took part in Sunday's poll, election officials said.

The plebiscite asked voters to approve a constitution that cements Chechnya's status as part of the Russian Federation and legislation setting the stage for future presidential and parliamentary election.

The official results of the referendum will be available on March 26.
