A two-day fair to promote trade and economic cooperation between Britain and east China's Anhui Province kicked off on Monday in the provincial capital.
The fair, entitled "Britain and Anhui -- Partners for the Future" and sponsored by the British Consulate General in Shanghai and the Anhui foreign economic and trade cooperation office, attracted more than 10 British-funded enterprises and leading local businesses..
Paul Sizelang, British Consul-General in Shanghai, expressed his hope that the provincial government and the local public, especially big companies, would become more familiar with his country's investments in China as well as leading British industries and their development trends.
The fair is expected to provide more opportunities for economic and trade exchange between the two governments and enterprises of the two nations, added Sizelang.
Anhui, ranked 11th in the country in terms of GDP, is one of the nation's economic powerhouses with 3.7 billion US dollars of imports and exports in 2002.
Two big British companies, Unilever and Tate & Lyle, have funded projects in Anhui and plan to increase their investments in the province by up to 600 million dollars.
Wen Haiying, vice-governor of Anhui Province, said that as a link between the country's vast underdeveloped hinterland and advanced coastal areas, Anhui would build on its advantages, such as its rich resources and low-cost labor, to further boost its economic development.
There are 42 British-funded enterprises in Anhui, using nearly 100 million dollars in investment.
Trade between Britain and Anhui rose to 60 million dollars in 2002.
