The US soldiers taken prisoner by Iraq will be treated in accordance with relevant international laws, Iraqi official told Al-Arabia satellite TV on Sunday night.

Salam an-Naseri, director of the Research and Information Department in the Iraqi Information Ministry, said he could not give an exact number of the US soldiers killed during the fierce battles in southern Iraq.

The fighting was still raging in Fao peninsula and Umm Qasr, the Iraqi official said.

Earlier on Sunday, the Iraqi military said 25 US and British soldiers were killed and dozens captured in fighting near Nasiriya, 375 km southeast of Baghdad.

US Deputy Commander of Gulf forces John Abizaid confirmed in Doha that the coalition forces Sunday met with "toughest" resistance in Nasiriya, and 12 soldiers were missing.

Naseri said Iraq had held a large number of prisoners, most of whom Americans in addition to some British pilots. He noted that Iraq would make the number public later.

On the same day, Iraqi television released footage of dead US soldiers and inquiry of those captured. The Qatar-based Al-Jazeera TV relayed the pictures.

Naseri said the appearance of US prisoners on TV screens came torefute the US lies that American troops were going to a journey andthe Iraqi people would warmly welcome them with flowers.

He stressed that most of the Iraqi prisoners held by the US and British forces were civilians.

US President George W. Bush demanded on Sunday that American war prisoners be treated humanely by Iraq, or the Iraq authority will face charges of war crimes.
