Crowds of Iraqis are searching for two US or British pilots who landed by parachutes after their warplanes were shot down by Iraqi anti-aircraft defenses, witnesses said.
The two pilots have thrown themselves into the Tigris river, and hundreds of Iraqi armed men are surrounding the river on both sides and others are using boats looking for the two pilots at 0300 PM local time, the witnesses said.
The Iraqi soldiers fired gun shots into the river during the search.
After the war broke out Thursday, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein announced that the government will pay 50 million Iraqi dinars (about 17,000 US dollars) to any Iraqis who captured any pilot.
