Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan said "captured enemy soldiers" will be shown on Iraqi TV later Sunday, while pledging that US troops will meet resistance in very town.

Ramadan, the highest-ranking Iraqi official to appear publicly after the start of US-led war on Iraq on Thursday, told a press conference here that a number of US soldiers were killed in battles near the small town of Souk-al-Shiookh, 400 kilometers southeast of Baghdad.

The vice president said Iraqi soldiers also destroyed US tanks and armored vehicles in the fighting, adding that "US invaders have treated" and warned that "they could not occupy the small town".

He said coalition strategy was built on information from "traitors".

The vice president said that a majority of UN Security Council members are opposed to "aggression" against Iraq and he called on UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to "act" and "be faithful to his responsibilities."

Iraqi Vice President calls on Annan to put end to war
Ramadan criticized Annan for withdrawing UN humanitarian workers and UN weapons inspectors from Iraq and accused him of acting as "an employee within the US State of Department."

"In October 2002, Iraq accepted the return of UN inspectors to prevent any aggression" and "Does anybody tell you that Iraq is not cooperating with the UN inspectors?" the vice president asked the UN secretary general.

Annan is now acting as "Iraqi high commissioner" by dealing with Iraqi funds and distributing Iraqi wealth, he said. "We didn't expect this kind of behavior and conduct from such a man."

From now on, neither Annan nor his US and British "masters" can impose anything on Iraq as what he has done contradicts all international agreements and the UN charter, Ramadan said.

As UN Secretary-General, Annan should condemn and try to put an end to the four-day-old war, the Iraqi vice president said.
