Iraqi ambassador to Russia Abbas Khalaf confirmed Sunday that a Russian citizen, presumably a journalist, had been killed outside Basra.

Reports about a Russian citizen's death in Iraq were circulated on Saturday.

According to the ambassador, the Russian citizen and some 50 Iraqi civilians, mostly women and children, came under a missile attack near Basra, launched by US troops.

"He was taken to a hospital in Basra where he died. He had documents identifying him as a Russian citizen, and a card of Hotel Sheraton in Al Kuwait," Khalaf said. He added he does not know this Russian citizen's name.

The Russian citizen is believed to have entered Iraq from Kuwait with US troops, Khalaf told Interfax.

The Iraqi civilians were also killed, he said.

He said that he will demonstrate videos showing the victims' bodies, filmed by the Al Jazeera company, at a press conference in the Iraqi embassy in Moscow on Sunday.
