What was claimed to be a terrorist attack on the US 101st Airborne Division in northern Kuwait appears to be the work of a US soldier as the US military has confirmed the detention of the soldier.
The soldier, reportedly a Muslim American, has been detained for questioning after the grenade assault wounded 13 of his comrades at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday (2230 GMT Saturday).
"A suspect was taken into custody following the attack on elements of the 101st Airborne Division. The suspect is a soldier assigned to the division," said US Central Command in a statement.
The motive of the attack is still under investigation.
It appeared that the attack was aimed at the leadership as two hand grenades were thrown into a command tent in Camp Pennsylvania, one of the US bases from where strikes were launched against Iraq.
Two of the wounded were treated at the scene and released and the rest were carried to field hospitals by helicopters, the statement said. Six of them are believed to be in a serious condition.
Neither the suspect nor the wounded are identified.
It's the first time that an attack from within the US military has happened since the so-called "Operation Iraqi Freedom" led by the United States began early Thursday morning.
