Russia, US Remain Partners Despite War in Iraq: Ivanov
Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said Thursday that Moscow and Washington would remain partners despite Russia's "deep regrets" over the US-led war in Iraq, according to the Interfax news agency.
Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said Thursday that Moscow and Washington would remain partners despite Russia's "deep regrets" over the US-led war in Iraq, according to the Interfax news agency.
Russia deeply regrets the war launched by the United States, but the two nations would "remain partners, not opponents," Ivanovsaid.
"Our nations must jointly search for a way out of the current situation in order to stop the war," he added.
Ivanov noted that Russia and the United States would gain the opportunity to solve numerous other problems if the Iraq crisis issolved through coordinated diplomatic efforts.
"If this war results in a split, we will be weakened when facing other threats," he said.
The minister meanwhile called for the resumption of UN inspection in Iraq, regarding it the basis for the lifting of UN sanctions over Iraq, the Interfax reported.
The inspection has not ended, but has been suspended, said the minister, adding that "it should be resumed as soon as necessary conditions arise."
Ivanov said some 20 staff of Russia's embassy in Baghdad was continuing working as normal. He said the diplomats would be immediately evacuated if their security was endangered.
