An international architecture competition is being held in Beijing for designs for the Beijing Shooting Range and Laoshan Cycling Velodrome -- two of the key competition venues for the 2008 Olympic Games.

The State Sports General Administration (SSGA), who are in charge of the construction and operation of the two venues, told a press conference here on Thursday that two designs will be picked out for each of the venues.

Six architecture companies and consortia, including those in Australia, Germany and Spain, have confirmed their interests in the shooting range project, while five institutes from home and abroad will vie for the honor of designing the cycling site.

"The candidates are required to submit their final entries by May 20," said Wang Baoliang, a SSGA official who oversees the construction of the two projects.

An evaluation panel consisting of prestigious architects, Olympic experts and government officials will then select two best designs from them, he added.

Domestic architecture institutes who win the competition will be awarded 300,000 yuan RMB (36,275 US dollars), while foreign winners will be paid 60,000 US dollars for the shooting range and 80,000 dollars for the cycling venue.

"After we finalize the designs for the two venues, the construction work will start by the end of this year," said Wang.

The Beijing Shooting Range and Laoshan Cycling Velodrome will be both located in the western part of Beijing, around 10 kilometers away from the Olympic Green.

With a 9,000-seat capacity, the Beijing Shooting Range will host all shooting events during the 2008 Olympics. The Laoshan Cycling Velodrome, the competition venue for track cycling races, will have 6,000 seats.
