Russia expressed the hope on Thursday that the casualties in US-led war against Iraq will be minimized, the Interfax news agency reported, citing a government source.

"As the military campaign was launched, we can only voice our extreme regret and the hope that the casualty toll would be minimal," the source said.

"Until the very last moment Moscow did not lose hope that the Iraqi problem could be resolved within the framework of international law, and that the use of force could be avoided," the source added.

The source also stressed that Russia should keep to its national, especially economic interests after the war.

Meanwhile, a security service source said Russia's security services have been alerted after the United States launched the war on Iraq.

No official comments from the Russian government were yet available.
