French ambassador to the UN Jean-Marc de la Sabliere said Wednesday that the United Nations and the Security Council are more important than ever in solving conflicts and keeping international peace.
French ambassador to the UN Jean-Marc de la Sabliere said Wednesday that the United Nations and the Security Council are more important than ever in solving conflicts and keeping international peace.
"The United Nations is more important than ever. We need collective responsibility and we need legitimacy and the United Nations are made for that."
He said France wants to show its support for the key role of the UN and the Security Council in Iraq crisis concerning the humanitarian aspect of the crisis and the rebuilding of Iraq.
He expressed France's belief that the Security Council and the UN have a key role to play in other crises and Iraq is just one ofthem.
On the reconstruction of Iraq, he said the central issue is legitimacy, namely, who is legitimate to act in Iraq. No country can rebuild peace alone in Iraq and that is why the United Nationsmust be the key player.
He also said France is convinced that the tools created by the UN weapons inspectors is absolutely necessary when the international community may face other crisis of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
On US criticism of France for obstructing a draft resolution authorizing the use of force to disarm Iraq, he said most of the criticisms he heard here in the United States are "absolutely unfair."
"On this matter it is clear to everybody. It is clear inside and outside the Security Council that we have different position,"he added.
