The Turkish government Wednesday night submitted to Parliament a new motion on dispatching Turkish troops to northern Iraq and permitting US planes to use its airspace to fly into Iraq.
The new motion was given its final shape at a meeting at the Prime Ministry, attended by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, Deputy Prime Minister Abdullatif Sener, Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin, and Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Ugur Ziyal.
The new motion was sent to Parliament at about 10 p.m. (2000 GMT) and it is expected to be debated and put to vote in Parliamenton Thursday, the Anatolia News Agency reported.
US Secretary of State Colin Powell called Foreign Minister Gul late Tuesday night, only asking Turkey to grant overflight right for a possible strike against Iraq.
If the motion is passed, US warplanes based in Europe or the United States would cross Turkey to strike Iraq. The United States could also use Turkish airspace to ferry troops into northern Iraq.
