10th NPC Standing Committee Holds First Session

The newly-elected Standing Committee of the 10th National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, held its First Session in Beijing Wednesday.

The newly-elected Standing Committee of the 10th National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, held its First Session in Beijing Wednesday.

Wu Bangguo, NPC Standing Committee Chairman, presided over Wednesday's meeting and delivered a speech on the work of the 10thNPC Standing Committee, pledging to basically establish a socialist system of law with Chinese characteristics within his tenure.

The meeting elected Wang Yunlong, Qiao Xiaoyang, Jiang Yunbao, Liu Zhen, Zhou Chengkui and Li Wenyi as deputy secretaries-generalof the NPC Standing Committee.

The law makers elected the chairmen and vice-chairmen of the Legislative Affairs Commission and the Budgetary Work Committee ofthe NPC Standing Committee.

The meeting also elected the chairman, vice-chairman and members of the Basic Law Committee of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) under the NPC Standing Committee.

Addressing the meeting, Wu said it was extremely important to stick to socialism when the NPC Standing Committee assumed its duty.

Balanced attention should be given to law making and supervision, two major tasks of the NPC Standing Committee, he said, urging the law makers to safeguard the dignity of the Constitution and laws and promote justice and the process of administration in accordance with the law.

Because the majority of NPC Standing Committee members were newcomers, they should change their old work mode and adapt to their new work as soon as possible, he said.

Under all circumstances, the NPC should follow the objective ofserving the people whole-heartedly and take the interests of the general public as the ultimate goal of its work, the chairman said.

All vice-chairmen of the NPC Standing Committee attended Wednesday's meeting.
