Fourteen US B-52 bombers, capable of firing cruise missiles, have been deployed at Fairford since the beginning of March after Britain gave the United States permission to fly the bombers into the base as part of its contribution to a possible military actionin the Gulf.
RAF Fairford, owned by Britain's Royal Air Force and designatedby NATO as a forward base for US warplanes, was a point of departure for B-52 bombers during the 1991 Gulf war and the 1999 Kosovo conflict.
US President George W. Bush has given Iraqi President Saddam Hussein 48 hours to leave Iraq from 0100 GMT Tuesday, but Saddam has flatly rejected the ultimatum, prompting speculation that military action on Iraq could begin before the deadline.
