Blair Says Toppling Iraqi Regime is Prime War Objective
British Prime Minister Tony Blair said on Wednesday that toppling President Saddam Hussein's regime is the prime objective of the imminent US-led war on Baghdad.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair said on Wednesday that toppling President Saddam Hussein's regime is the prime objective of the imminent US-led war on Baghdad.
"It is the case that if the only means of achieving the disarmament of Iraq of weapons of mass destruction is the removal of the regime, then the removal of the regime has to be our objective," Blair told lawmakers in the House of Commons.
However, he added that the quarrel is not with the Iraqi people.
Meanwhile, the prime minister declared that senior members of Saddam's regime "will be held responsible for what they have done"and the will, not just of Britain but of the United Nations, has to be upheld.
Blair, the firmest US ally in disarming Iraq, succeeded in winning his most crucial parliament vote Tuesday night over his motion supporting military action against Iraq, despite the strongrevolt from his own Labor Party.
The vote, which was passed with 412 in favor and 149 against, gave Blair the green light to employ "all means necessary" to disarm Iraq.
