Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi plans to announce, possibly early as Tuesday, that Japan will back a U.S.-led military attack on Iraq without a second resolution from the United Nations Security Council, government sources said late Monday.

The sources said the Koizumi plans to formally spell the position of the Japanese government as the United States, Britain and Spain have decided to pull off the resolution after failing to get a consensus at the Security Council in the face an explicit threat of veto from France.

The announcement is expected to come after U.S. President George W. Bush addresses the American nation Monday night Washington time, or Tuesday morning Japan time.
