Putin, Chirac Call for Further Diplomatic Efforts to Iraqi Crisis
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Jacques Chirac called for further political and diplomatic efforts to solve the Iraq crisis, said the Kremlin.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Jacques Chirac called for further political and diplomatic efforts to solve the Iraq crisis, said the Kremlin.
"Both sides stressed the necessity to continue with diplomaticefforts within the UN framework despite the seriously deteriorating situation," the Kremlin said in a statement following their telephone talk held late Monday.
Russia and France last week joined Germany in a last-ditch effort to avoid war by urging the Security Council to draw up a disarmament task list, binding Iraq to strict deadlines Baghdad must keep to preserve peace.
The proposal would come before the Security Council on Wednesday, Russia's envoy to the United Nations Sergei Lavrov was quoted as saying by the Itar-tass news agency Monday.
The United States, Britain and Spain on Monday withdrew their draft resolution seeking UN backing for war on Iraq, closing the diplomatic window and setting the stage for imminent strikes on Baghdad.
