UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's personal envoy, Maurice Strong, will pay a visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) this week, a UN spokesman said Monday.
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's personal envoy, Maurice Strong, will pay a visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) this week, a UN spokesman said Monday.
The five-day visit, the second to the nation in the past three months, will begin Tuesday, spokesman Fred Eckhard told reporters.
Strong will discuss with the DPRK government the "progress on the emergency appeal by the secretary-genereal to meet the immediate humanitarian needs" in the nation, he said.
The envoy will also share with the government "the results of his intensive meetings and consultations on other issues of mutual interest and concern," the spokesman said.
Eckhard confirmed that South Korea has pledged 100,000 metric tons of food to the World Food Program's humanitarian project in the DPRK.
Strong's last visit to the DPRK was in mid-January, which was mainly focused on the country's humanitarian situation.
