Director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of China's State Council Chen Yunlin has criticized former Taiwan leader Lee Tung-hui for his latest remarks backing the island's independence. Chen Yunlin spoke on the sidelines of the ongoing NPC session in Beijing.
Chen Yunlin reiterated Beijing's One-China principle on Sunday, a day after Lee Tung-hui ratcheted up his pro-independence rhetoric calling on the island to change its name from the "Republic of China" to "Taiwan."
"Our position is well-known. We always oppose those separatist remarks supporting Taiwan's independence. We believe all the remarks supporting Taiwan's independence are provocative," said Chen Yunlin.
NPC deputies from Taiwan have echoed Chen's comments saying they're in favor of the island's reunification with the mainland.
Meantime, Belgium and France have refused to issue visas to Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian to address the European Parliament later this month.
On Friday, the National People's Congress expressed strong opposition to the European Parliament's earlier decision to invite Chen Shui-bian to speak at its session.
