Germany on Sunday asked all its citizens in Iraq to leave the country immediately and said it would close its embassy in Baghdad when all German nationals have left.
The Foreign Ministry warned in a travel advisory that "German citizens in Iraq are advised to leave the country immediately."
The German embassy in Baghdad is scheduled to be closed down as
soon as all German nationals have left Iraq, according to a spokesman of the ministry speaking on condition of anonymity.
The ministry had warned Germans against trips to Iraq on Friday, upgrading an earlier advisory from two weeks ago which did not claim urgency.
Germany, a traditional ally of the United States, opposes the pro-war position of Washington in the Iraq crisis.
