Russia Warns US of Global Opposition to Iraq War
The Russian Foreign Ministry on Thursday urged the United States to note that most Non-Aligned Movement nations voiced against a war on Iraq at this week's United Nations session.
The Russian Foreign Ministry on Thursday urged the United States to note that most Non-Aligned Movement nations voiced against a war on Iraq at this week's United Nations session.
An "overwhelming majority" of some 50 nations who spoke at the March 11-12 meeting in New York came out against the war, the ministry said in a statement.
"Plans for unilateral military strikes against Iraq, especially without sanction of the UN Security Council, are causing enmity and anxiety in the international community," the statement said.
A war would "inevitably have negative consequences on stabilityin the Middle East, and for the whole system of international security, which is based on the UN Charter," it added.
The statement also underlined that weapons inspection conducted by UN teams in Iraq were producing "positive results" and must continue.
