Work of Relinking Inter-Korean Railways to Be Resumed Late March
Re-linking work of two sets of inter-Korean railways will be resumed late this month in the demilitarized zone (DMZ), according to South Korean Yonhap News Wednesday.
Re-linking work of two sets of inter-Korean railways will be resumed late this month in the demilitarized zone (DMZ), according to South Korean Yonhap News Wednesday.
In a three-day working level meeting held in Kaesong, near southern border city of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), South Korea and the DPRK reached an accord Wednesday to start the reconstruction work of the western Gyeongui (Seoul-Sinuiju) railway and eastern Donghae railway in late March from the military demarcation line (MDL) inside the DMZ to their respective side, said Yonhap.
Under the accord after the three-day talks from Monday, the DPRK agreed to provide monthly notifications of its use of equipment and materials that the South side has provided.
In addition, nine South Korean technical staff will visit the DPRK later this month to make preparations for the reconnecting job.
Moreover, the two sides agreed to hold further negotiations on a protocol concerning the operation of trains, reported Yonhap.
The two sides on the Korean Peninsula previously agreed to reconstruct Gyeongui, Donghae railways and their adjacent roads in an inter-Korean economic cooperation promotion meeting held last August in Seoul. The work suspended over both sides' differences on the timing of the job.
Up to now, the two sides have finished the de-mining work in the DMZ as preparation for the reconstruction and opened two cross-border makeshift roads respectively accessing to Kaesong and the DPRK resort Mount Geumgang from South Korea.
