Greek EU Presidency expressed deepshock Wednesday over the assassination of Serbia's Prime Minister of Serbia Zoran Djindjic earlier in the day.
Greece, which holds the current EU rotating Presidency, strongly condemned "this atrocious act of violence, which is incompatible with a sound democratic system," a press release issued here said.
"The assassination of the Prime Minister of Serbia coincides with an important and crucial period for the future of the new State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, especially as far as its European perspective is concerned. The Presidency calls on the political leadership in both Republics to take all the necessary measures so that the democratic principles and stability in the country may prevail in these testing times," the press release said.
Meanwhile, the Greek government also expressed sorrow over Djindjic's assassination, calling it a "heinous act of violence, which unfortunately coincides with an especially critical period for democracy and stability in the course of the confederation (Serbia-Montenegro) to the European Union."
