German government leaders expressed their shock Wednesday over the assassination of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic.

Europe saw Djindjic as "an important guarantor for a future in the Balkans with peace and stability," said German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

He added that Djindjic "was a personal friend."

German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, who was on an official visit to Slovenia, said he was "personally shocked" to learn of the murder.

Djindjic's assassination is proof that the forces of terror in the Balkan region have not been overcome yet, he said in Ljubljana.
