No casualties have been reported after a strong aftershock measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale jolted northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Wednesday, said an official with local seismological bureau.
Zhang Yong, director of the bureau's recovery office, said Wednesday's aftershock was the strongest since Bachu and Jiashi Counties were rocked by a devastating quake on Feb. 24.
The Feb. 24 earthquake claimed the lives of 268 people and injured more than 4,000 others, and was followed by more than 4,000 aftershocks, four of which measured over five on the Richter scale.
Zhang predicted houses surviving from the previous quake would collapse.
The aftershock occurred at 12:47 p.m. (Beijing Time) and the epicenter was located 100 kilometers from Bachu County and 60 kilometers from Jiashi County, said Zhang.
