AVIS Taps China's Car Rental Market

A joint venture set up by Europe-based car rental company AVIS and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation went into formal operation Tuesday in Shanghai.

A joint venture set up by Europe-based car rental company AVIS and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation went into formal operation Tuesday in Shanghai.

The new company enables clients in Shanghai to reserve a car inthe city and overseas locations via the AVIS global booking system,according to a company source.

The joint venture currently has 12 outlets in Shanghai with unified business and service standards.

The company expects to expand its service to major cities in China with a vehicle capacity of 5,000 units in the next five years, according to the source.

The 50-year-old AVIS, which operates in major airports worldwide, now has 5,000 outlets in 170 countries and regions, with more than 500,000 vehicles.
