A US Army Black Hawk helicopter with 13 people aboard crashed on a routine training mission in a snow-covered area in upstate New York on Tuesday, officials said.
At least one survivor was reported walking around the crash site near Fort Drum, home to the Army's 10th Mountain Division, Lt.Col. Bryan Hilferty, a Fort Drum spokesman, told local television.
The television report, citing Pentagon officials, said the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter was carrying 13 soldiers, including the four-person crew. All of those aboard are members of the 10th Mountain Division.
The helicopter disappeared at about 2 p.m. EST (19:00 GMT) and debris was spotted by search-and-rescue teams about one and a half hours later, Hilferty said. The area where the helicopter went down is covered with a couple feet of snow, and search helicopters and ground teams are aiding in the rescue.
The injured were taken to the Samaritan Medical Center in nearby Watertown, New York, but their conditions were not disclosed.
Equipped with advanced avionics and electronics, such as the global positioning systems, the UH-60 Black Hawk is a medium-lift cargo and troop helicopter. It can carry as many as 15 people.
