Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC), said Friday the new central leadership will adhere to the established policies of the central government toward Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions (SAR).

"We are resolved to work together with Hong Kong and Macao compatriots to push forward the great cause of 'one country, two systems', and we are also confident of it," he said at a joint panel discussion with Hong Kong and Macao members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's

Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the top advisory of China. They are here attending to on-going First Session of the 10th CPPCC National Committee.

After listening to the members' views and suggestions on major national issues, Hu said Hong Kong and Macao have maintained social and economic stability since their return to the motherland respectively in 1997 and 1999. The overall situation in Hong Kong and Macao remains good thanks to the joint efforts of the SAR governments and compatriots in the two regions.

"We are pleased to see that the majority of people in Hong Kong and Macao SARs endorse and support the 'one country, two systems' policy and the basic laws of the two SARs, and the international community in general also view positively on the situation after the return of Hong Kong and Macao."

"All this proves that the 'one country, two systems' policy is completely correct and is of great vitality," he added.

Hu stressed that in the future, the new central leadership will follow and enrich the major experience drawn during the implementation of the policy in the last few years, that is, to correctly carry out the 'one country, two systems' policy in an all-round way, to act in strict accordance with the basic laws, to give full support to the chief executive officers and governments of the SARs, to strengthen the wide solidarity of Hong Kong and Macao people from all walks of life under the banner of loving the motherland, loving Hong Kong and Macao, and strive to maintain social stability and harmony and economic prosperity and development in the two SARs.

He hoped the CPPCC members could work to draw together Hong Kong and Macao compatriots for the development of the two SARs.

As long as Hong Kong and Macao compatriots continue to carry forward the spirit of constantly striving to become stronger and the tradition of meeting challenges flexibly and unite to work harder still, they are sure to overcome all difficulties lying ahead and create a brighter future for Hong Kong and Macao SARs, he said.

Jia Qingli, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and chair of the meetings of the executive chairpersons of the presidium of the First Session of the 10th CPPCC National Committee, also attended the joint panel discussion, which was presided over by Fok Ying Tung, an executive chairman of the presidium.
