US on Multilateral Dialogue over DPRK Issue Makes Obstacle: Russia
Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Losyukov warned Friday that the US stand on involving other countries in efforts to solve its conflict with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) was the main obstaclefor a peaceful solution to the crisis.
Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Losyukov warned Friday that the US stand on involving other countries in efforts to solve its conflict with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) was the main obstacle for a peaceful solution to the crisis.
"Unfortunately, attempts to forge a dialogue between the United States and the DPRK in any format have failed," Losyukov was cited by the Interfax news agency.
"The United States believes that this can only be done in a multilateral format, and this is the main root of the difference."
US President George W. Bush said Thursday that the best way to deal with tensions over the DPRK's nuclear program is to involve other nations in the region, including Russia, China, South Korea and Japan.
Losyukov said the situation was "gradually deteriorating" and that unless progress is made, "a serious conflict may break out on the Korean Peninsula."
