Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi Thursday discussed the Iraqi crisis with French President Jacques Chirac but did not talk about a likely U.N. Security Council resolution on a possible war.
"I told him that the issue is one between the international community and Iraq, even though media reports focus on confrontations between the United States and France," Koizumi was quoted by Kyodo News as saying after their 15-minute telephone conversation.
According to Kyodo, Koizumi also told Chirac that in considering how to deal with the Iraq issue Japan will bear in mind the importance of international cooperation in persuading Iraq to disarm.
Chirac said he thoroughly understood Japan's position, Koizumi told the news agency.
But Koizumi said the leaders did not discuss the draft of the resolution proposed by the U.S., Britain and Spain as a key step before a possible attack on Baghdad, a plan France has opposed, Kyodo added.
